Significance Facts About Davao City
Ocampo: Madayaw Dabaw!By Tek OcampoNews room DURING my stint with GMA Manila, a lot of people were asking me what it's like to live in Davao City. I just simply answered them: It's the best place in the world. It is indeed, "the land of promise" so to speak. I've been to the States, Australia and some parts of the country but there's no place like Davao. You want to know why? One, it's one of the cleanest and the most livable city in Asia. The local government means business in protecting the natural environment in the city. Despite thousands of settlers living along the Davao River and the coastal areas in the city, the local government was able to maintain the balance of ecology within the 244,000-hectare land area of Davao. Fresh water fishes continue to flourish in Davao River. Two, the food is great and affordable. Just more than a hundred kilometers away from General Santos City, fresh tuna, tons of it, makes its way to Davao everyday. Part of it is being exported abroad. And, some are shipped to Manila and different parts of the country. That is why, you can eat all the tuna you want for a fraction of a price compared to Manila. Fruits! Wow! Mango, pineapple, banana, lanzones, mangosteen, pomelo, papaya, guyabano, avocado and the famous durian. Name them, we have them all in abundance! Three, there are numerous tourist spots to visit. To name a few - the Pearl Farm, Malagos Garden, Eden Nature Park, GAP, Crocodile farm, The Infant Jesus of Prague Shrine at Matina Hills, and the Philippine Eagle Nature Center. The good news is, you don't have to spend a lot of money to visit these places. And would you believe, they are just located within the city? Pearl farm and close to hundred of other beach resorts are located in the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte,
but they're just within 45 minutes drive from the city by boat. So, if you want a luxurious getaway with your family or friends, Davao is the place to be. Four, you can use your cell phone within the busy sidewalks of Davao without having to worry if someone will snatch it from you. Maintaining peace and order in Davao city has always been the main concern of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who was dubbed by Time magazine as "The Punisher." The 911 emergency response center is one of the flagship projects of the city mayor. It is one of the only three in the world, the two being in the United States and Canada. The mobile patrols of 911 are strategically positioned in crime prone areas in Davao to achieve maximum response time. The current response time is estimated 5 minutes from the time the call was placed. Five, no traffic and no stressful driving within city limits. Even if one part of Governor Generoso bridge in Bankerohan is still under repair, the traffic management center still manages to maintain the flow of traffic smooth. A 20-minute traffic standstill is already annoying for most motorists in Davao. Though the city's modern traffic signalization systems are still not fully operational, during a normal but busy day, traveling on a 10-kilometer stretch will take you about 15-20 minutes traveling time. Six, the local government of Davao was the first city to strictly implement a "no smoking" law or the anti-smoking ordinance of Davao. If you are caught smoking in public areas such as malls, restaurants, bars, and other public places, you can be fined and probably arrested and jailed. Davao is also one of the first cities in the Philippines to ban the use of pyrotechnic on all occasions to include Christmas, New Year and Chinese News Year. If you are caught violating such law, you will be arrested and put to jail. Since the city banned the use of pyrotechnic in 2001, Davao has maintained its zero casualty in fire cracker related accidents. Seven, aside from being known as having one of the best drinking water in the world, the people of Davao are enjoying a 24-hour water supply. Because of strong pressure, sometimes it can damage your pipeline. Eight, the people are kind and very hospitable. Nine, Davao City is the best place to invest in tourism, agriculture and various other types of business ventures. The Mindanao Business Council which is based in Davao now holds the chairmanship for the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area. Banana, pineapple and poultry are among the many export products that bring in more revenue for the city. The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Incorporated is actively participating in making sure that Davao as an investment capital in Mindanao will continue to attract more businessmen. With the help of the City Council of Davao, The Chinese Chamber of Commerce has agreed to create our very own China Town. Ten, Davao City is typhoon-free! The last recorded typhoon that hit Davao del Sur was in 1970. The typhoon particularly hit Malita, Davao del Sur
which is more than a hundred kilometers away from Davao city. I can tell you hundreds of reasons why I truly love Davao, but the best way to know about it is experiencing it yourself. So when you're in Davao, forget your problems, enjoy the beauty and abundance of our city.
Happy Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival!
